Important Update Regarding Insurance and Couples Counseling
I will no longer be submitting insurance claims for couples counseling. This decision comes after careful consideration of insurance requirements for medical necessity, which are not typically met in relational counseling.
Insurance typically covers Family Psychotherapy with a Support Person (CPT Code 90847), which involves treating an individual with a mental health diagnosis with the support of family members. Couples counseling, however, focuses on improving the relationship between partners and does not meet the criteria for insurance coverage, which raises ethical concerns.
Many therapists have stopped working with healthcare plans due to these stringent requirements. I am committed to offering ethical, effective relational counseling and aligning my practice with these values. While some therapists use CPT code 90847 for relational counseling, I have chosen not to in order to maintain transparency and ethical billing practices.
Options Moving Forward:
1. Private Pay for Couples Counseling – Focuses fully on relational concerns without insurance limitations.
2. Individual Therapy Through Insurance – If one partner has a mental health diagnosis, insurance may cover individual therapy.
3. Health Savings Accounts (HSA) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) – These can be used for relational counseling.
